For the last 8 years—since moving to Pullman and planting Resonate—I’ve raised support.
A lot has changed in those years. I’ve gone from living in a car, to a family’s basement while their son was off at college, to another basement, to an apartment, to getting married, to buying a house, to having a daughter. And God has been faithful through it all. We’ve never missed a meal, never missed a bill. The more we need, the more He gives. It’s like Old Testament manna in the Martin house.
Last week was support week. A whole week dedicated to creating, contacting, and cultivating relationships with new supporters. I sent out 12 letters, and have 40 more to go. Some of you may have received one of those letters.
We have more need, so we’re going back to the God who gives through His people.
Support raising is humbling. To know I’m buying coffee with someone else’s money puts life in perspective. The gospel tells me my life is not my own, scripture says my money isn’t mine, but support raising integrates that truth into every transaction.
Every dollar we spend reminds us of God’s goodness.
Every trip to the mailbox could be a worship experience.
Last week reminded me of this: Support raising isn’t about charity, it’s about church.
All throughout the New Testament, Paul helped churches through other churches. It’s biblical and beautiful when God’s people come together to use their money for God’s mission.
Where your money is, your heart is, and throughout history it’s clear: The Gospel moves forward when God’s people put their hearts and their money towards God’s mission through the sustaining and sending of local church missionaries.
You may not need that reminder. I do. Because I struggle to ask for charity. But I don't struggle to invite others to partner with God in the work of reaching college students through the local church. I’ve been doing it for 8 years, and by God’s grace we will get to do it for 40 more.
Through His people, we’ve seen Him provide, and we’re at it again. Trusting. Believing. Working. Knowing manna will be there in the morning.
